Following these guidelines should provide you with sure-fire and satisfying results when you shave your legs:
Don't shave your legs first thing in the morning. Your skin is puffy from natural body fluids having settled under your skin while you were sleeping. This means that a good deal of the hair shafts are hidden, which makes it harder for your razor blade to get a close cut of the hairs. Wait a while. Your skin will become more taut and hairs better exposed.
Fully moisturize the hairs before shave your legs. Dry hairs are tough to cut and they'll break instead. Dry hairs will also dull your blade much quicker, and a dull blade will create razor burn.
Your skin needs to be moisturized as well because it will help your razor's blade glide more easily across your skin. You should also exfoliate to remove dead skin cells from your skin before you shave your legs. If you don't, these cells will be scraped into and irritate the hair follicles, (the skin depression from which hairs emerge), creating unsightly bumps.
So take a hot shower or soak in a bath to moisturize your hair and skin and gently scrub your skin with a washcloth or a loofah to get rid of those dead skin cells.
Apply plenty of a good, rich lubricant when shave your legs. Don't even think about using soap. It dries out your skin and we were just getting it moisturized.
It's a good idea to allow this lubricant to sit on your hair and skin for a few minutes before you shave your legs. This will give it a chance to further soften your leg hair, lock in moisture, help keep the hair erect, reduce friction and condition your skin.
Forget anything you've ever heard about being able to use a used blade to shave your legs because this skin is not so sensitive. A dull blade is the number one cause of all skin irritations. Do not shave your legs with anything but a clean, new razor blade.
Shaving your legs is one of the few exceptions to the general rule that shaving should be done with the direction the hair grows. Don't apply much pressure or repeat strokes over the same area, but go ahead and shave against the way hair grows.
Try not to shave over skin blemishes when you shave your legs. Slicing the top off of a blemish will only agitate and maybe even infect it.
Thoroughly rinse off any remaining lubricant with warm water after shaving. Then, rinse again, with cold water this time. This will help soothe and tone this now aggravated skin.
Pat, don't rub, your legs with a clean, soft towel.
Always work in a moisturizer after you shave your legs. Apply it a second time, but just let it soak in naturally this time.
Try not to wear clothing that will constantly rub against your skin right after shaving.
And stay out of direct sunlight, which could cause your rather raw skin to become swollen and splotchy, right after you shave your legs.
Although, you can bypass all the normal problems altogether by hearing what Brenda Shackley from Tucson, Arizona has to say about what leg shave tools she uses to get silky smooth skin without any irritations.
