The proper name for hair removal cream is, 'depilatory', which is derived from the Latin meaning, "completely deprive of hair". And yes, depilatories were in existence and being used way back then.

Of course these, and those throughout the ages, were no where near as nice of concoctions as our modern day depilatories ...

Ancient depilatories consisted of a paste, which you could hardly call a hair removal cream, made with either beeswax, resin, white vine, pitch, ass's fat, ivy gum extracts, bat's blood, she goat's gall or powdered viper.

In Europe during the early Eighteenth Century, one homemade depilatory included applying the boiled, distilled water of beaten egg shells, which doesn't sound too bad. But the most popular hair removal cream was a mixture of cat's dung and vinegar.

The most extreme depilatory of that time was a paste made of "quick lime". This is a caustic substance made from powdered limestone or shells that develops active, burning properties when mixed with water. So basically, burning the hair off.

North American women in the 1700's flat out used caustic lye as a depilatory to burn away hair.

The first modern depilatory developed in 1940, which was finally a hair removal cream, destroys the protein structure of hair, keratin, reducing its texture and strength to a goo, because of a high degree of acidity from sodium and calcium thioglycolates.

Today, the hair removal cream is still a popular at home hair removal method for both females and males.

Depilatories can work pretty well if you need to remove hair quickly, as opposed to the time it can take to shave. You simply apply the hair removal cream, wait a short while and then thoroughly rinse off with warm water.

One major disadvantage of a hair removal cream is that the chemicals that dissolve the hairs can also burn your skin - Worse than a razor burn.

Aside from being a bit messy, another disadvantage of using a hair removal cream is that when the chemicals mix with hair, there's an unpleasant sulphur like odor - They smell really bad. And this smell remains on you, anything you've used in the process and in whatever room you've applied this cream for quite a while.

The final disadvantage of a hair removal cream is is that it tends to have pretty spotty results. Even if you're careful to apply the cream as evenly as possible, and wait the maximum allotted time, usually no more than ten minutes, you'll still find areas that have hair intact after you wipe it off.

And don't even think you can do it again. Remember - This stuff BURNS!

You'll either have get used to being called, "Patches", or shave. And even shaving's not a good idea because your skin is already going to be raw.

Whatever else you do - Be sure to THOROUGHLY wash off every bit of this hair removal cream with warm water.

And then it would be a good idea to flush your skin with cold water to help soothe your skin.

Jeremiah Deets from Buffalo, New York says he knows an excellent alternative method to using hair removal cream that he just raves about!
