Today, body builders are not the only people who body shave. Everyday people shave their body from their heads to their feet. But no matter who you are, where or why you shave your body, every body is always looking for a better way to get better results.

It's not that hard really to get better results if you just follow a few simple rules. And these basic rules apply to wherever you choose to shave your body.

If you're going to shave your body where there are long hairs, trim them down first. Don't waste your razor blade cutting these long hairs, you need your blade to be as sharp as possible to get the cleanest, closest shave and limit irritations. An added benefit is that trimming longer hairs will make it easier to see where you are shaving.

Dry hairs and dry skin will not allow you to shave your body without irritation. Dry hair is tougher to cut. It tends to break more easily. And drawing a sharp blade across dry skin is one of the best ways to create irritations.

So take a long, hot shower or bath if at all possible. In fact, no matter what part of the body you shave, it's best if you can do so while you're in the shower or bath.

Hot water and steam will open the follicles, the depression in the skin from which the hair emerges, and soften the hairs, which will help your razor cut the hairs more cleanly and closer to your skin.

If you really can't take a shower or bath before shaving, at least apply a hot cloth for several minutes.

Use a lubricant that doesn't contain harsh chemicals. Your skin is already going to be irritated from shaving. You don't need to add "salt to the wounds". Read the label. If there are ingredients you can't pronounce, don't use it. There are plenty of natural shaving aids out there that can be used for any part of the body you shave.

Apply a generous amount of this lubricant. And make sure you have plenty as you continue to shave your body. The idea is to keep the hairs and skin slick to help the razor cut closely, cleanly and smoothly.

Now, pay attention - If you've been using a blade more than once - STOP IT.

While you're shaving, the hair is pulled up some, a sharp blade cuts it, and then the hair goes back under the skin. A dull blade will pull on the hairs harder, aggravating the follicles, and then only tear the hairs, leaving them with ragged tips. So now you have these ragged tips going back under the skin into follicles that have already been aggravated.

Maybe now you can understand why a dull blade is the NUMBER ONE cause of irritated skin no matter where you shave your body.

With the exceptions of the head, armpits and legs, you should first shave your body hairs in the direction they grow. Then you can shave against the growth to get that close shave and smooth feel.

But try not shave any one area more than this second time or apply too much pressure as you're shaving because these actions will also irritate your skin.

And such are the basic rules for better results when you shave your body.

One suggestion - Use a shaving tool that's safer than a wet razor to body shave.
