It used to be that a man with lots of body hair was seen as a manly man. And even though in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome a man shaving his body was seen as being civilized, the earlier belief is what stuck throughout the centuries, and what most men, even to some extent today, believe. That a man with lots of body hair is a manly man.

It seems even evolution is playing a part towards a man having less hair. It's a genetic fact that since man has been wearing clothing, body hair as protection or a signal of prowess is no longer needed and with each generation men have become noticeably less hairy.
